Engelse literatuur/Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift (Dublin, 30 november 1667 – aldaar, 19 oktober 1745) was een Anglo-Iers satiricus, essayist, politiek pamflettist (eerst voor de Whigs, vervolgens voor de Tories), dichter en geestelijke die deken werd van St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin.

Swift is nu vooral bekend voor werken zoals Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity en A Tale of a Tub. Hij is waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste satiricus in Engels proza. Als dichter is hij minder bekend. Oorspronkelijk verschenen al zijn werken onder pseudoniemen, zoals Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, MB Drapier - of gewoon anoniem. Hij staat ook bekend om zijn meesterschap in de twee vormen van satire: de stijl van Horatius en de stijl van Juvenalis.
